Springs’ Six Best Coffee Shops

The Springs may have been “lame” in years past, but don’t let anyone tell you that nothing has changed. While the food scene is still building steam, and craft cocktail joints are only beginning to burgeon, the coffee culture here in Colorado Springs has already exploded and is as hot as the likes of Denver, San Fransisco and even Portland.

What follows is On The Table’s definitive list of the six top spots for, not only superb coffee, but top quality beans and excellent service. These local cafés roast their own coffee, and are the hubs where Springs’ coffee community interconnects and mutually thrives.

Switchback Coffee Roasters
330 N Institute St
Tops for: Great beans & lingering with friends

The Springs’ first Third Wave roaster sprang to life via Nate Bland’s brilliant manipulation of a humble air roaster. What was good then, is now only better. Fast forward three years and Switchback remains a top roaster. Owner and local pastor, Brandon Delgrosso has assembled a solid management team who have taken most every aspect of the roasting and café to the next level.

Loyal Coffee
408 S Nevada Ave
Tops for: Brilliant food menu & cocktails on tap

This belongs-in-New-York café is a collaboration of a half-dozen of the greatest coffee minds in the Springs. With the goal of facilitating community around the beloved beverage of coffee, and despite the space’s edgy decor, the folks at Loyal are anything but pretentious. Go for the coffee, stay for the food. Loyal’s menu is second to none, and offers a legitimate destination for every meal of the day.

Story Coffee Company
120 E Bijou St
Tops for: Consistent quality & intimate atmosphere

It’s a tiny house. You know, the kind on wheels. Small looking from the outside, yet impressively roomy on the inside. The visionary proprietors, Don and Carissa Niemyer, are most always behind the La Marzocco espresso machine, and always good for a conversation. With their small space they can get by with an extremely small staff, making beverage consistency one of their strong suits.

Building Three Coffee Roasters
2727 N Cascade Ave, Suite 155
Tops for: Inviting space & proximity to fellow Lincoln School start-ups

Relocating from Arizona, Sean Buckles arrived in the Springs to realize his vision for a high quality roastery and café. After a brief time of sharing Peak Place’s roasting machine, the full buildout in the Lincoln school has been a success for the only Springs’s café serving the “Sproda,” a glorious amalgamation of espresso and cream-soda.

Peak Place
2360 Montebello Square Dr, Ste H-1
Tops for: Friendly staff & local beer selection

The only notable café not in the downtown area, Peak Place (not to be confused with other cafés with “peak” and “perk” in their name) is bringing quality coffee to the central Springs demographic, and doing very well at it. Their roasting program, Hold Fast Coffee Co., is where Nate Bland has landed and continues to work his magic.

R&R Coffee Café
11424 Black Forest Rd
Tops for: Siphon coffee & great beans

An outlier in both location and association, this Black Forest café, while not intimately interconnected with all the goings-on down south, has kept its roasting program relevant and highly competitive. Stop by and chat with owner/operator, Ryan Wanner, for coffee made in a siphon, and an immersive 411 on all things coffee.
